Below Freezing Temperatures At The Off Grid RV Homestead

submitted by Renee on 11/30/13 1

The weekend was quite cold at the off grid homestead. Thursday night I loaded the wood stove up and closed off the damper to see if I could burn it all night. Some time in the night the fire went out and I was cold again. Back to the drawing board. Due to some people warning me that the wood frame in the shed may burst into flame I have not been using the wood stove anymore until I safely insulate and protect the wood. I painted the large water tank black to hopefully absorb some heat from the sun during the day and keep the water from freezing during the cold nights. I hope this helps. I also used cardboard to seal up some drafts in the chicken tractor and stuffed the chicken beds with leaves for insulation and warmth. I covered the whole thing in a tarp to reduce drafts. The birds are doing well and thanked me. On Saturday the guys in my church got together and we worked on cars for the day. I needed to change the oil in my car, washed and waxed it and detailed the interior. It was badly needed before winter so I am happy I got it done.
