Russia has launched large-scale unplanned military drills on the same day NATO started the Arctic Challenge wargames. The maneuvers, underway in central Russia, involve 12-thousand servicemen from the Air Force and air defense forces. Two hundred and 50 aircraft and helicopters as well as 700 military equipment are being used in the maneuvers that will last four days. The Defense Ministry says the wargames were ordered by President Vladimir Putin, who is also chief of the Armed Forces. The stated aim of the drills is to test the battle readiness of Russian forces. The exercises coincide with NATO holding Europe’s largest fighter jet drills. The maneuvers are being hosted by three Nordic states Sweden, Norway and Finland.
