Dr. William Massey shares his passion for mathematical sciences and for building research communities of excellence. In this talk, he tackles the issues of minority under-representation in the sciences and urges us to Think Plural! William A. Massey is the Edwin S. Wilsey Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University. Prior to joining the Princeton faculty in 2001 but after receiving his PhD in mathematics at Stanford University, he worked for twenty years as a research mathematician at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. He is the first African-American to be an undergraduate at Princeton (mathematics major in the class of 1977, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi) before becoming a full professor there. His research interests range from the probabilistic field of queuing theory to the related applications found in the modeling and design of communications and healthcare systems. He was born and raised in Missouri in the cities of Jefferson City and St. Louis respectively. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
