PUPPY PEDICURE - HOW TO CLIP, FILE & POLISH PUP'S NAILS. We show you how to confidently give your pup a pedicure at home - with a few tips and guidelines your pup will have healthy groomed nails complete with Designer Dog Nail colored polish! Roland's nails are polished in a RED colour. All nails have a quick (blood vessel) inside the nail. This is the part you want to get as close to as possible, without actually cutting it. You should use a good quality pair of canine clippers and have some styptic powder on hand in case of nicks. With white clear nails you will be able to see the point at which the blood vessel ends. For good measure, go 1-2mm past this and clip confidently and decisively. Black nails are a little harder. Take the hook (hollow end of the nail) off first. If you prefer leave black nails at this and get your groomer to do the rest. If you wish to go a little further, the middle of the nail will contain a darker black circle. Cut off very small sections until you get to a lighter spot in the center of the nail (we use Guillotine style Clippers) . This as far as you can go without cutting the quick. Finish off by filing the sharp nail with an emery board, making sure to hold the nail still. If your dog is distressed or struggles at any point, stop immediately. HOW TO APPLY NAIL POLISH Human nail polish is not recommended as it has many chemicals so go and buy some special designer dog nail polish for your pup. It dries quickly -- does not contain harmful ingredients and is formulated for pup's nails. 1/ Use Designed Dog Nail Polish 2/ Apply in a well-ventilated area 3/ Trim the hair around the base of the nail. Use a blow dryer on the feet to make sure there aren't any strands of hair touching the nails. 4/ Spread the toes apart so you can paint the lower portion of each nail and insides more easily. 5/ Apply polish as close to the bail base as possible without getting any polish on the fur. 6/ Start polishing from the inside nail and work out. Most dogs will sit fairly still while having their nails polished. But if you have a dog that doesn't like to hold still, have someone hold the dog or distract it with treats while you apply the polish.
