How to Potty Train Your Puppy (Petco)
In this how-to video from Petco, learn how to train your puppy to use a potty cue. A puppy should go potty within 15 minutes of waking up, eating, drinking, or playing. If you’ve added a puppy to your family, try to start training on a weekend when you have the time to create a routine. Put on your puppy’s collar and leash and seat him by your backdoor. We recommend using potty time bells. Encourage him to ring the potty time bells. When he does, say "Yes!", open the door and lead him outside. Designate an area of the backyard as his potty spot. Stand still and try not to let him get distracted. Use a verbal cue like "get busy" or "go potty". Give him at least 10 minutes to relieve himself. If he does, praise him and give him a favorite treat then head back inside. If he doesn’t, go back inside and keep a close eye on him to prevent accidents, then repeat the steps in about 20 minutes. When you’re not home, confine your puppy to his crate and give him his favorite toy. Crating helps avoid accidents or your puppy running to the backdoor when you are not there to hear his cue. When you’re home, always let your puppy outside right away when he rings the bells. Reward him right after with praise and a treat. If accidents happen, be patient. If they become more frequent, try to determine if your puppy is becoming stressed, and consult with your veterinarian if there are any sudden changes in your puppy’s potty routine.
