Aiki-Lab: Addressing the 800 lb Gorilla in the corner of the Aikido dojo

submitted by Carl Desousa-Oldenburg on 05/25/15 1

From my section of the Aiki Extensions European Conference, addressing the discrepancy of calling our art "non-violent" and "reconciliatory" while still controlling our partners using wrist locks and throws. The Aiki-Lab system of learning and teaching aikido is designed to use beneficent energy to support our partners throughout their attack so that the feeling they get from their expression is positive rather than feeling bested or defeated. The understanding that "kaeshiwaza," or "reversals" exist is proof that the actions in wrist locks and throws are attacks, as true harmony is irreversible by definition.
