Aiki-Lab: Using mental imagery to produce beneficent intention

submitted by Carl Desousa-Oldenburg on 05/25/15 1

In this practice session aikidoka using the Aiki-Lab non-technique training use the idea of a wasp on the cheek of uke injecting a poison that is making uke in to an attacker. This imagining gives the brain an avenue to transcend the fear response caused by the perception of threat brought on by the grab. By wanting to help uke to recover from the effects of the wasp nage creates an expanding energetic flow that is a natural effect of beneficent intention. This "flood" of ki combines with the penetrative spear energy of the attack to create a path of aikido that leads the attacker to the floor without coercion. When practicing with this method, ukes must remember to express spear energy, that is, energy that extends outside of the body to penetrate the central core of the target (nage). It is this authentic attack energy that combines with the flood of ki produced by the beneficent intention to power the aikido.
