Energy expressed through somatic fields manifests in the physical in accordance with intention. If we imagine that ki is like water in a vast, unlimited reservoir in the universe, the way we tap into it and allow it to flow through us produces aiki - or not. When we answer attack with energy expressed through the intention that our partner benefit from our interaction, not only does the combined energy of uke and nage result in an aiki path but the attacker has an experience of being supported rather than thrown.
