Homeschooling Different Ages

Homeschooling different ages of children can be difficult to imagine at first. You may believe that you need to come up with multiple curriculum for multiple children, but that is not always the case. There are benefits to homeschooling different ages. Standard grade levels issued by public and private schools are a very arbitrary thing and don't necessarily apply to your household. Children that are close in age can usually share lessons language arts, music and art, science and history with corresponding assignments that match their comprehension level. One of the benefits that stems from this approach: the younger child is typically challenged more and becomes more advanced. You also don't need to teach every subject every day. College classes typically meet once a week, and many elementary and high schools have adopted this approach as well. Spending time teaching one shared subject and one additional subject each day gives you more time to give your children the one on one time you want to give them. When homeschooling different ages, you don't have to teach and lecture all of them at the same time. For example, while one child is working on an assignment, you can spend one on one time with another, while a third works on a computer. Oftentimes, older children can help teach younger children their lessons while you are busy. This not only teaches them patience, but they form closer friendships as well. Another benefit of homeschooling several children: it teaches them independence. Homeschooling multiple children teaches children to function as a family. They learn to act as a team. It also teaches them that life doesn't revolve around them. These are skills that public schools don't always have time to teach children. That's the biggest benefit of homeschooling all your children, no matter their age. Music - Feelin Good by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
