SFC's Grow Local program offers the resources and education to enable children and adults in Central Texas to develop skills in food production and organic gardening as well as an understanding of the importance of local food production for the health and well-being of themselves, their families and community, and the environment. Did you know that Texas is ranked third in the nation for food insecurity (USDA, 2007)? This means that over 15% of households in Texas lack the means to provide consistent nourishment for maintaining health. Access to fresh, nutritious, affordable food by community members is vital in promoting community health and preventing disease. For many urban residents, growing their own food is essential for survival.
