Martha Anton y Manolo "El Gallego" Salvador: Canyengue

submitted by Bruce Finlayson & Lynette Harper on 05/02/15 1

Martha Anton and Manolo "El Gallego" Salvador dancing a Canyengue, a precursor of Argentine Tango at a milonga in Stowe, Vermont, 24 May 2008. According to Robert Farris Thompson (in his book: Tango - The Art History of Love), the word "Canyengue" originated in Kongo and Angola, meaning "melt to the music", "step it down", "start to party", further supporting the African roots of Canyengue and Argentine Tango.
