Corrente from the B minor violin partita (Voxman): So you want to be a Clarinet player

submitted by earspasm on 11/23/13 1

Let me get this out of the way: Yes, I'm diversifying. Yes, I'll still make more Bass Clarinet videos. Yes, it's not *perfectly* played — I didn't have that much time to record this weekend — but hopefully it gets the point across! Okay, so today I'm playing another from the Voxman Classical Studies for Clarinet -- a terrific book. In this episode I discuss: • Air — specifically how to trick your lungs into thinking you are playing a long tone, but are actually moving your fingers and articulating. It's one of the ways to get consistent phrasing and support behind your playing. And, it actually helps your fingers get the job done more easily. • Articulation — I only touch on this, but I think of the tongue here as just a "valve" (I got this analogy from my wife Katherine). Your air is constant like a water in your pipes is constant. The faucet just is a valve that lets it flow out of the pipes. Same goes for your air. The tongue is simply what temporarily stops the air from going through the clarinet. Think about that for a second... • Bach sub-phrasing — as we all know, Bach was a total genius. Though this movement is in 3/4 time, much of it can be phrased in 6/8. And, there are terrific sections of it where Bach shifts the beat by one or two eighth-notes to play with the sense of rhythm. Amazing stuff. Bring it out whenever you recognize it. I show you a couple examples here.
