The Calgary Public Library developed a series of commercials to promote the five behaviours essential to developing language and pre-reading skills: talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Reading and writing go together. Children become aware that printed letters represent spoken words. As they scribble and draw, they practice hand-eye coordination and develop the fine motor control that they will need to write letters and words. The Calgary Public Library is dedicated to 'Growing Readers'. For more information on how you can develop your child's early literacy skills, visit your local Calgary Public Library branch or log onto calgarypubliclibrary.com.
