"It's been a dream of mine to have some official outdoor pickleball courts in this town somewhere. I figured it would be 15 years down the line. When I heard that they were actually lining these with officials lines, not tapes, with paint, I sort of went hysterical in my office," said Betsy Underhill, an avid tennis and now pickleball player, who became an ambassador for the sport in Greenwich after playing in Ridgefield. The black lines on the newly resurfaced Christiano Courts make the court the first multi-purpose court in Greenwich - for tennis and pickleball. Dirctor of Parks and Recreation Joseph Siciliano said, "We are hoping that it will be infectious. That people here that have already played will enjoy playing here and new people will come from either the neighborhood or elsewhere to want to play on the courts." So what exactly is pickleball? "It's a small court with a light racket and a wiffle like ball. It's very quick and very active. It's a combination of badminton, tennis and ping pong," said pickleball player Bill Cox. While the sport seems to attract an older crowd, players say the sport is ideal for kids as well. "The court is a smaller court so if kids are too little to be able to play the full sized tennis court, if you are young and small, it's a lot easier to adapt and start out either playing tennis on the smaller sized court or playing pickleball. So it's really a great sport for all ages,"said Superintendent of the Parks and Recreation Department Susan Snyder On Mondays from 10 am to noon, you can "drop in and play pickleball on the Christiano Courts without having to reserve a court.
