Visit to Strathmartine Hospital in Dundee Scotland before its demolished to make way for housing. Strathmartine Hospital was the first institution of its kind established on 7th July 1853 and subsequently gifted to 'The people of Dundee'. Strathmartine is one of many institutions created in the 19th century for people with a learning disability. Strathmartine Hospital is located on the outskirts of Dundee. It was created by Sir John and Lady Jane Ogilvy in 1852 because their daughter had been born with learning disabilities. It was originally part of an asylum and orphanage in Baldovan and was the first hospital in Scotland for children with learning disabilities. The Ogilvy family donated part of the Baldovan Estate and some money to create the new building. Work started on the 7th July 1853 and it opened in 1855. By 1896 the buildings and land were full. Further development took place in the early 1900’s including a Main Administration Block, three Ward Pavilions, Cottages, Dining and Recreation Halls, Laundry, School and a Boiler House. A Nurses Home and two wards were added in the 1920’s. In the 50’s funding was provided to create new Pavilion Blocks, houses and other facilities, then in 1964 the Main Building Pavilions were upgraded and joined together. It was around this time that the Institution building and the school were demolished. A local Mill owner donated his house and grounds to the hospital. At this time the site was renamed Strathmartine Hospital. As the momentum towards community care built during the 1990’s some of the buildings were sold. All the residents were resettled in new services in the community and the hospital finally closed in 2003. NHS Tayside sold the site in 2005 to a property developer. In due course new housing will be built on the site.
