In Spanish, to give birth means "dar a la luz," the literal translation of which is "to give light." But for those of immigrant parents, it is a dark time to be born in the Dominican Republic: a recent court ruling has retroactively stripped immigrants of their "birthright citizenship." Yet women are fleeing Haiti for the superior maternal care that Dominican Republic continues to provide regardless of their legal status. (Edited by Tarryn Mento, videographer by Lisa Ruhl, photography by Lauren Gilger) How this was done: Lauren, Lisa and I spent eight days in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic reporting this story for the Cronkite Borderlands Initiative in 2011. We set some interviews up prior to arriving but most were arranged on the fly. Lisa Ruhl served as the main videographer during our visit to Jimani and in the bateye, but I filmed the interviews in the hospital and ambulance en route to the bateye. I did a lot of the editing on this video, including the two-box shots, while Lauren did most of the motion and text graphics. She also found the music bed for this piece.
