November 9, 2013—Meet the women described as "underground astronauts"—scientists tasked with squeezing into a narrow cave to recover what's believed to be early hominid bones. It's thought these bones could help shed more light on the origins of humans. National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Lee Berger is heading the project to retrieve the bones from a largely inaccessible cave in South Africa.
