Self-Esteem vs. Self-CONTROL: The Benefits of Willpower & Personal Discipline...

dotheknowledge.com/transcend Here's a short video-mixdown I made of social-psychologist Dr. Roy Baumeister discussing the benefits of cultivating willpower and self-control, in contrast with that of self-esteem... "Willpower is what separates us from the animals. It's the capacity to restrain our impulses, resist temptation -- do what's right and good for us in the long run, not what we want to do right now. Willpower is central, in fact, to civilization itself." "Self-esteem was a huge disappointed...it didn't really deliver the goods. As it turns out, making people more conceited doesn't help them in any palpable way. But self-control is the real deal." "It's actually difficult to identify ANY major personal problem - anything that lots of people are suffering from - that doesn't have at least some degree of self-regulation failure as at least part of it." BENEFITS OF SELF-DISCIPLINE... ------------------------------------------- Those who cultivate willpower are more likely to: - Succeed in work and at school (at all levels) - Enjoy good, healthy relationships (more stable, less conflict) - Have a tendency towards happiness and experience low stress-levels - Be better adjusted in terms of all sorts of mental and emotional health measures - Be physically healthier - Are less likely to commit crimes or go to jail - Are less likely to engage in abusive relationships - Are less likely to be prejudice and - ...and actually LIVE longer That's quite an impressive list for something that's a psychological trait, which I think warrants paying considerable attention to it."
