inConversation with Jimmy Heath

submitted by dbdoughnuts on 01/24/15 1

On Mon, Oct 30, 2011, I had the distinct honor to chat with legendary sax man, little Jimmy Heath, at his apartment in Corona Queens. Amongst other things he is preparing for a NEA Masters show later in the month at Flushing Town Hall. Jimmy doesn't seem 85 years old. He is a young dude that just happened to play in a group with Miles Davis. I asked Jimmy, "I heard you replaced John Coltrane in Miles Davis' group. What was that like?" He said, "No man, I brought the 'trane into the group!" It really was quite an experience to talk to this iconic figure in the history of American jazz. I was surprised I could even speak.
