In dulci jubilo (BWV 751) by J. S. Bach performed by Henry Doktorski on the 1982 Schlicker 2-manual and pedal organ at Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church, Rochester, Pennsylvania. Publisher: Edition Peters (Nr. 248a) Organ registration Swell: 8 Cromorne Great: 8 Bourdon, 2 Block-floete Pedal: 16 Subbass, 8 Gedackt A note from the performer: In dulci jubilo is my favorite Christmas Carol. It is such a happy tune: "In sweet rejoicing." Because of the text, I like to play this tune as a dance in a lively tempo, just as it is sung in church on Christmas day. This version is quite short and simple, with two long pedal points in the bass. In this arrangement, the tune is first presented, then repeated in the dominant (mm. 37) which then returns to the tonic (mm. 62). I especially like measures 18-25 and 54-61 in which the soprano and alto voices "dance" together. Truly a joyful trio which is a pleasure to play and to hear. German/Latin text (stanza 1) from Wikipedia by Heinrich Seuse, c.1328 In dulci jubilo, Nun singet und seid froh! Unsers Herzens Wonne Leit in praesepio; Und leuchtet wie die Sonne Matris in gremio. Alpha es et O! English literal translation In sweet rejoicing, now sing and be glad! Our hearts' joy lies in the manger; And it shines like the sun in the mother's lap.
