South African Teenagers Sing Opera: Umculo / Cape Festival presents Henry Purcell's "Fairy Queen"

submitted by Liket on 11/22/14 1

A trailer for Umculo/ Cape Festival's 2012 production of Henry Purcell's semi-opera "The Fairy Queen". The production, which was made with teenagers from the choir of Bloekombos Secondary School, was shown in both Johannesburg and Cape Town and will be revivied in 2013. Stage director Robert Lehmeier and conductor Gerben Grooten worked with singers from throughout South Africa. Members of the National Youth Orchestra of South Africa joined professional instrumentalists from the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Trondheim Soloists, while Umculo's education team offered workshops for hundreds of children and young people from disadvantaged communities in Johannesburg and Cape Town, all of whom then had the chance to attend one of the performances.
