Collective individuality -- reconstructing the public realm | Zhanina Boyadzhieva | TEDxBG

submitted by OneChurch on 11/13/14 1

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is the color of our city? For her thesis at Harvard Graduate School of Design, Zhanina Boyadzhieva questions the impulsive answer "grey" by most Bulgarians and delves into a year-long study that compares the Socialist and Post-Socialist cities in Eastern Europe. The case study is Sofia, capital of Bulgaria. By comparing the ideologies and urban expressions of both paradigms, Zhanina follows the transition from one system to another through the lens of sociology, architecture and city planning. She extracts advantages and disadvantages from both and proposes a new way of thinking about the future city as a balance between the community and the individual. She applies some of her ideas in the redesign of the largest residential communist neighborhood in Sofia - Lyulin. Zhanina finished her Masters in Architecture Degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her passion is the relationship between architecture, cities and social behavior. She has collaborated with CultureNOW (Boston, New York, Los Angeles), interned at Rocker-Lange Architects (Boston, USA), Kokkinou+Kourkoulas (Athens, Greece) and taught at Boston Architectural College. In her spare time, she loves to travel, sail and dance. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
