The legendary Gordon Koang Duoth landed in Calgary, Alberta on September 18, 2013. It was an emotional moment for the South Sudanese community here in Alberta. Many of the people have been listening to Gordon Koang's music since their youthful days. They know his music word for word. Gordon Koang sang about unity, humility, love, forgiveness and many more meaningful topics. He's the beacon of hope for the South Sudanese people. During the Sudanese civil war where the south and north Sudan were at war he sang about love and unity. He wanted the Sudanese people to see their humanity and how they were interconnected. Gordon was multilingual because of that ability he was able to sing in many languages that the local citizens spoke. Whether you spoke Nuer, Dinka or Arabic he had music for you. He was very popular among all tribes and even the government favored him. He was a peaceful and comforting individual. Being in his presence it's like being next to God. Gordon Koang Duoth was born a blind man. He can't see. His humility and loving nature draws people to him. He's one individual on the planet that truly knows a person from the inside. He's understanding and loving to all that come around him. You can feel and see his peace. Around him you feel blessed and loved. Gordon Koang is loved by everyone that knows him. The South Sudanese people adore him greatly. He can't see the tribal marks of his people and he can't see the appearance of his people. Therefore his people feel safe and accepted by him. Gordon Koang was a powerful force behind the South Sudanese liberation from Bashir's regime. He sang songs that uplifted and united his people. He had the type of connection and popularity with his own people that the politician dream of. When he spoke we all listened. Through his music we fought our way to freedom. The children of war and after war know who he is and why he is so important. He was one man of South Sudanese origin that inspired a nation to fight for themselves. By Nyabuoy Gatbel
