2010 Proviso East highlights of the St. Charles East Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament, where a young (but well-seasoned) Pirate team finished second in a extremely competitive field that included 5 top-ranked teams in the state of Illinois. These highlights, include games against the Saxons of Schaumburg H.S. (IL) and a team led by hall-of-fame coach, Gene Pingatore, St. Joseph Chargers (Westchester, IL). The 2010 Pirates are powered by six-foot junior point guard, Keith Carter. Strong rebounding defines, Trashaun Carroll (6' 6, jr.,center) who can also provide inside scoring against stronger opponents. Rounding out the starting five, off-guard Paris Lee (5'10" Soph.), offers strong ball handling skills and accurate outside shooting. Power forward Tino Vazquez, brings a defensive presence and can defend most opponent's best player, regardless of size & ability. Sterlin Brown, (6'5, soph, brother of Los Angeles Lakers guard, Shannon Brown), will conjure up sweet memories of Michael Finley ('91), or even earlier, Rick Wilson ('80). A very athletic and gifted player, Brown offers an explosiveness only a few possess. Expectations are running very high in Maywood, IL again. The prestigious Proviso West Holiday Tournament, will begin to answer questions about how far this team can advance in the state tournament. Ten (10) former Proviso East players will be honored on December 29, 2010 for being named to the PROVISO WEST HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT 50-YEAR ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM. Those well-deserving players are, AL NUNESS (the first player to ever score 20 points in a championship game), JIM "PAPA" BREWER (considered one of the greatest defensive players of all-time in Illinois basketball history), JOE PONSETTO (The 1973 Proviso West Holiday Tournament Most Valuable Player, led the tournament in scoring), GLENN "DOC" RIVERS (Boston Celtics Head Coach, one of only three players to be a three-time All-Tournament Team selection, led tournament in scoring on the way to MVP honors), DONNIE BOYCE, (guided Proviso East to the 1990 Holiday Tournament and 1991 State Tournament title), MICHAEL FINLEY, (scored 20 points and a record 12 assists in the 1990 tournament title game), SHERELL FORD (The 1990 Holiday Tournament Most Valuable Player, scored 28 points in title game), KENNY DAVIS, (part of two Proviso West Tournament titles, three championship game appearances and two state championships), DEE BROWN, (averaged 19.8 points in tournament play and was selected to All-Tournament Team), SHANNON BROWN, (leading scorer of the 2002 Proviso West Holiday Tournament, averaged 24.5 points for the tournament).
