Steve Sasson, former Kodak engineer and inventor of the digital camera, discusses the creation of the first digital camera prototype in 1975 and how the concept was demonstrated within the company during the following year. He also shares the little known technical developments that occurred over this time period and his observations about how to deal with disruptive innovation within the corporate environment.
Steve Sasson joined Eastman Kodak Company in 1973 as an electrical engineer working in an applied research laboratory. He engaged in a number of early digital imaging projects. Among these was the design and construction of the first digital still camera and playback system in 1975. Sasson received a B.S. and Master's degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and in 2009 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation at a White House ceremony.
