Modular design allows for mixing and matching standard components within a machine to vary its function. For example, standard batteries (AA, AAA, etc.) are replaceable modules that can be selected for low cost, long life, single use, or ability to recharge. Other examples of modularity are found in nature and throughout the productive endeavors of humankind. Join Eric Friesel, Ph.D. Candidate in Technology Management at Indiana State University and a B2 bomber pilot at Whiteman Air Force Base, as he explores modular design from the 16th century, through the enlightenment, and into the digital age.
