The ASÍ Art Museum is located in Ásmundarsalur, Freyjugötu 41 in Reykjavík. The museum was founded in 1961 when industrialist and book publisher Ragnar Jónsson donated his art collection to the museum. The museum is owned by the Icelandic Confederation of Labour. Ragnar Jónsson laid the foundation for the art museum by donating his personal art collection - around 120 outstanding paintings by Iceland's most renown painters; Ásgrímur Jónsson, Gunnlaugur Scheving, Jóhannes Kjarval, Jón Stefánsson, Júlíana Sveinsdóttir, Nína Tryggvadóttir, Svavar Guðnason, Þorvaldur Skúlason and more. Ragnar's wish was to establish an art museum which would bring art out to the working classes. The ASÍ Art Museum has always kept that in mind and has also specialized in putting up exhibitions in workplaces and various institutions around the country. As well as exhibiting paintings from the museum's art collection, the museum is also a platform for contemporary art exhibitions. Annually there are held about 10-15 exhibitions in the museum. The art collection has grown steadily over the years. The museum has received many gifts and a lot of artist's have given their works to the museum. The museum has also added to the collection by buying Icelandic contemporary art work.
