Like Serpent Mound in Ohio, the snake effigy of Snake Butte, South Dakota has been a bit of a mystery....until now. The vision serpent and the plumbed serpent of the Mayans were their link to the creator God...and his spiritual realm. Turtle effigies have also been found in this area, turtles are a direct link to the Mayan creation story. Native "vision quests" are part of the tradition at Snake Butte.
