www.tapmagonline.com On September 21st 2013, Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed and attacked the upscale Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The attack, which lasted more than 3 days, resulted in at least 72 deaths, including 61 civilians, 6 Kenyan soldiers, and 5 attackers. This past Thursday, October 3rd, Carlton University students in Ottawa, Canada held a candlelight vigil in remembrance of those that lost their lives in the attacks. The event was organized by Carleton's university student association (CUSA) International Student Centre and the East African Students Association at Carleton U. Bertha Kizito, who helped organize the event as EASAC's president, expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and to all Kenyans saying that "as a Ugandan, I know what Kenyans are going through (Uganda) having experienced a similar Al-Shabaab attack three years ago". Elvin Rugerinyange, a former EASAC president and the student whose idea it was to host a candlelight vigil in solidarity with Kenya told TAP MAGAZINE that the event's turn out not only showed how multicultural Carleton community is but also that "we are one" with Kenya.
