SLAAM (Semaphore Live Arts Activism Music) evolved sometime during 2010 out of a get together of five like minded, justice loving, musician friends from the western suburbs of Adelaide SA. We are a totally 'not for profit community volunteer organisation' Our idea : to organize events which provide a venue for local artists to perform and at the same time raise awareness of and current issues that we feel strongly about. Eg: Local & Global Minority Groups, Refugees, Global Disasters, Anti Nuclear Awareness, etc... Our hope: to raise money which is directly donated towards good local charities & causes and hopefully be able to pay musicians to perform, .....another worthy cause! By creating events for musicians & artists from diverse cultural backgrounds in a local Semaphore / Port Adelaide venue to perform in, profits made from food, drink and door takings are donated directly to ethical charities & organisations which we support. Above all, SLAAM's aim is to provide a good, safe & fun night out for local people of all ages in the local area, something which we feel is sadly lacking! To date SLAAM has held some very successful fundraiser events involving Live Bands, Film Nights & monthly Open Mic sessions! Since 2010, SLAAM also participates in organizing an annual outdoor live music event for the global 'Earth Hour' end of March, in conjunction with local permaculture eco sustainable living, community organisation, Transition Adelaide West. SLAAM have raised money to send a huge container of books to a school in East Timor and we have donated a good large sum of funds to refugee support organisations in Adelaide.
