The Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology (USEIT) is a collaborative research program run by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) at the University of Southern California (USC). Interns develop technical tools to communicate important concepts about earthquakes in Southern California and other earthquake-prone regions. USEIT interns are mentored by some of the nation's leading earthquake and computer scientists. Since 2002, the USEIT program has built a community of over 200 alumni from more than 35 colleges and universities. USEIT research revolves around one central project: the Grand Challenge. For the 2014 Grand Challenge, UseIT interns were charged with developing SCEC-VDO and GIS tools for exploring and evaluating the aftershock hazards implied by the new Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast(UCERF3), guiding these evaluations using M7 rupture scenarios developed by them as well for the 25th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. USEIT is supported by the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates Site Program and the University of Southern California. Significant support for USEIT interns has come from the USC Department of Earth Sciences, Pasadena City College and East Los Angeles College.
