Airbnb Tech Talk: Nicole Sullivan - OOCSS and Preprocessors

submitted by kevincarter on 10/20/13 1

"OOCSS and Preprocessors in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G" Many developers believe they need to choose between OOCSS and CSS preprocessors like SASS/Compass and LESS. Nicole believes that the best sites pair the strengths of both approaches, pulling the architecture from OOCSS and the language additions from SASS. She will share with you some of her war stories, including everything she screwed up when switching to using preprocessors and how she finally found a balanced approach to developing large sites using preprocessors. Nicole is a front-end performance consultant, CSS aficionado, and author. She started the Object-Oriented CSS open source project, which answers the question: how do you scale CSS for millions of visitors or thousands of pages? She also consulted with many companies including Facebook, Salesforce, the W3C, Adobe, Paypal, and Box. She is the co-creator of Smush.it, an image optimization service in the cloud, and CSS Lint, a tool that helps correct common CSS errors before they are pushed to production. She is passionate about CSS, web standards, and scalable front-end architecture for large commercial websites. She co-authored The Web Performance Daybook, Vol 2 and Even Faster Websites and blogs at stubbornella.org. She speaks at conferences including jsconf, Velocity Conference, Web Directions, CSS Summit, An Event Apart, Webstock, jsconf.eu, SXSW, and Fronteers. www.airbnb.com/techtalks
