Kiribati is one prime example of what can happen in the future. As the temperatures rise globally thanks to the global warming, scientists say major cities like London, Mumbai, New York and many of the coast islands will be submerged under water the the future at the current global warming rate. Scientists are currently studying the ancient ice which will help them predict how much the water level could rise. But ultimately there is nothing we can do to stop it.
