At least 40 people have lost their lives in Israel's heavy shelling of Gaza's eastern Shejaiya district. The death toll is expected to rise significantly as a large number of bodies are lying around the streets. Hundreds of people have also been wounded in the bombardment. The Israeli army has reportedly prevented ambulances and emergency services from reaching the area. It has also rejected a Hamas request for a 3-hour ceasefire to evacuate the injured. Thousands of people have fled the district, many of them on foot.
