Hamas and Israel have agreed to a 12-hour ceasefire, which will allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The truce, which was mediated by the United Nations, will begin at 5 GMT on Saturday. The UN has also called for the creation of a humanitarian corridor in Gaza. Hamas has said that before it can agree to any lasting ceasefire, Israel must lift its seven-year blockade of Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli siege had caused poverty and hardship for the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip since 2007.
