At the time, I had no idea who Ed was other than he was that nice man from the party who lived in Ipswitch with his darling wife. In my youthful ignorance and naivete, I called him up and asked him if he wanted to do a book with me. WHAT NERVE! WHAT GAUL! I had published only two baby books and was a total neophyte in the book biz- and I was asking a Caldecott Award winning illustrator to work with me. Without laughing at me or dismissing me, he instead gave me an assignment to come up with an idea for a sequel to Go Away Big Green Monster. I gave him three ideas...including an idea for a book about monster emotions with cut outs to make a "wearable book" that kids could use to talk about their feelings. He liked this one and pitched the idea to Little Brown. What great generosity. What kindness. Glad Monster, Sad Monster has had a marvelous life and has been translated into Spanish and French and Braille and has been redesigned so the monster masks can be detached and stored in the book. GMSM is used all over the world, especially in classrooms, to help kids identify and talk about their feelings. Thanks Ed for giving me a chance. Thanks so very, very much. The sequence for this video is closer to the intent of the first edition. We have added sound effects and voices for fun and further explanation of the emotions and feelings discussed. As there are no masks to put on, children are asked to pretend they are the monsters. If you have the masks at hand, there are prompts to indicate when to put them on.
