Written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and produced by Terry Melcher, "Kicks" was recorded by Paul Revere and the Raiders for their 1966 LP, "Midnight Ride". Released as a 45 RPM single in February of that year, the song entered Billboard's Hot 100 at #62 in March and peaked at the #4 spot in May. Some censors, based on the song title alone, mistakenly believed "Kicks" glorified drug use but the song actually carries an anti-drug message. "Kicks" spent 14 weeks on the charts and finished the year in the #25 position on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1966 chart.
