The Last Train to Clarksville THE MONKEES (with lyrics)

submitted by MrsHiggs on 06/21/23 1

The debut single for The Monkees, which made #1 in the USA and Canada, but a disappointing #23 here in the UK back in 1966. The song was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Hart had turned on the radio in his car and caught the end of "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles. He misheard the lyrics and thought McCartney was singing "take the last train" and decided that a similar sound would be a hit. He even took the Beatles' famous "yeah, yeah, yeah" and turned it into "oh, no,no, no" for this song. Anyway, enjoy it! Mickey Dolenz is singing lead vocal.
