The first half of the 60s ushered in the all girl pop ballad vocal groups. The Crystals, signed by Phil Spector, are thought to be one of the defining acts of that era. Of there several chart hits, "Uptown" was their second reaching #13 , and is a very good example of Spector's famous "Wall of Sound" technique that added a rich dimensional effect to his productions. This song incorporates castanets, Spanish guitars, violins, etc., etc., etc.
