The Contours performing "Do You Love Me", released originally in 1962. It reached #1 in US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and #3 in US Billboard Hot 100. "Do You Love Me" was written by Motown president Berry Gordy, who initially intended it for The Temptations. However, they failed to arrive for the recording session and The Contours were asked to record it instead. The song became one of Motown's first hits and stood out for its sexy sound compared to the tamer offerings dominating the charts. The song peaked in popularity just as Motown launched their first "Motortown Revue" tour, where The Contours were stars of the show. The song was recorded in the midst of a recording session where The Contours were supposed to record "It Must Be Love". Joe Billingslea of The Contours initially didn't like "Do You Love Me" and even said, "This song ain't gonna do nothin', man." However, it quickly became a hit and has since become a Motown classic.
