Treatment Strategy of Hypospadias Surgery in Boys Hypospadias is a frequent birth defect that affects newborn boys. The penis of infants with hypospadias does not function properly. As a result, they may feel difficulty in urination. Also, it doesn't appear natural. During this condition, the meatus, the hole for urination, is situated below the penis. In contrast, the hole might be present along the penis's bottom. The meatus is typically present at the end of the penis, in the middle of the shaft, and sometimes near the scrotum. However, the condition does not indicate problems outside the urinary system. Most newborns with hypospadias have an extra foreskin on the penis, and that foreskin should not be removed. Instead, surgeons can use it to relocate the meatus to its original place and to straighten its pathway for urination. In addition, hormonal imbalances during fetal development could lead to hypospadias. When hypospadias is present, it is usually observed shortly after birth. It's not only that the meatus is in the wrong spot; the bottom of the foreskin is also typically undeveloped. Surgical Repair of Hypospadias in Boys The main purpose of this surgery is to upright the urinary tract that terminates at or near the tip of the penis. There are primarily 4 stages to the process: • Straighten the penis shaft • creating a passage for urine • Meatus insertion into the penis's tip • Foreskin adjustment (circumcision) and reconstruction Surgery for hypospadias correction typically takes between 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the hole's location. Sometimes it's necessary to do the fixing in phases. First, the foreskin is adjusted to the right place, and the hole is relocated to the tip of the penis. The skin takes almost 6 months to get attached to the penis. The pediatric surgeon typically straightens the penis before the urine channel is created. Candidate for Hypospadias Surgery Full-term, healthy boys between 6 and 12 months are the ideal candidates for hypospadias surgery.
