Wait, Is It True That 50 Years Ago Queer Was A Mental Illness

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the American Psychiatric Association’s removal of homosexuality from its Diagnostic Manual in 1973. The year led to an important shift in mental health practices as clinicians stopped asking questions like “What causes homosexuality?” and “How can we change it?” and focused instead on the health and mental health needs of LGBTQ+ patient populations. Psychiatric diagnosing of homosexuality as a mental disorder began in the 19th century. Many psychiatrists including Sigmund Freud looked at homosexuality as psychological immaturity or illness. American psychiatry mostly ignored the growing body of sex research that saw homosexuality as normal. All this started changing in the wake of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. Finally, in 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) -- the largest psychiatric organization in the world -- made history by issuing a resolution stating that homosexuality was not a mental illness or sickness #health #mentalhealth #homosexuality #homosexuality #show #funny #talk #show #funnyshow #gay #lesbian #laugh #sexy #drag #iho #its #happeningout #itshappeningout
