Many Historians debate when the Second World War actually began, and some consider that it began with the Japanese Army's invasion of China in 1937. But during the whole conflict, the Japanese conducted scores of war crimes and one of the worst atrocities in History conducted by them occurred at Nanking. It's estimated that 200,000 people were killed in the massacre around the city as the Japanese forces carried out a huge war crimes around the large city. Inside of Nanking, there was huge scale looting, stealing and executions. On the banks of the River Yangtze, thousands of Chinese soldiers were killed by the Japanese forces. The war crimes committed inside of the city were so brutal the it's alleged that even General Iwane Matsui, the commander in charge of the Japanese Army was shocked by what his soldiers had done. After the end of the Second World War, a number of the war criminals were placed on trial and were executed for their involvements in the Nanking Massacre and other Japanese war crimes.
