Gibraltar was ceded by Spain to Great Britain in perpetuity in 1713. The Rock of Gibraltar is a symbol of British naval strength. Part of its fortification was to create 34 miles of tunnels, more than twice the length of Gibraltar's roads. This construction took place over the course of nearly 200 years, beginning with the Great Siege of Gibraltar.
