Senegal - Ilha de Saint-Louis

submitted by JoeNative on 10/14/13 1

With a good seaport, Saint-Louis, also known as the Venice of Africa, was the first city on the African coast that possessed defensive structures; it was an important trading centre for gold, Arabic gum, ivory and slaves. It lost its importance in favour of the new capital Dakar, when Senegal achieved its independence. Today, the city’s main activity is fishing, with more than 4,000 fishermen. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
