Die portugiesischen Entdecker nannten sie einst Bahia Formosa, die schöne Bucht. Sie diente als Relaisstation für die Schiffe der VOC (Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie) nach Indonesien und war in späteren Jahren eine Wahlfangstation. Plettenberg Bay liegt ca. 500 km östlich von Kapstadt an der Garden Route und ist über moderne Straßen gut erreichbar. Inmitten der malerischen Bucht liegt auf einem Felsvorsprung das Beacon-Island-Hotel, das in Form eines Schiffes gebaut wurde und noch heute im Inneren durch seine Architektur fasziniert. Hier kann man direkt aus dem Hotelzimmer den Delphin-Schulen in der Bucht bei ihrem Training zusehen. Das nahegelegene Naturschutzgebiet auf der Robberg-Halbinsel bietet Möwen und Robben eine Heimat. Von Juli bis Oktober ist die Bucht bekannt für die Walbeobachtung. Die Wale verbringen hier ihre Paarungszeit und nutzen Plettenberg Bay als Aufzuchtstation für Jungtiere. Amidst the picturesque bay on a rocky outcrop you find the Beacon Island Hotel, which was built in the shape of a ship. The architecture inside still fascinates the visitors today. Here, one can watch the activities of the dolphin schools in its training in the bay directly from the hotel room. The nearby nature reserve on the Robberg peninsula is home for seagulls and seals.
