1939 New York World's Fair in Colour

The World's Fair (now known as Expo) has been held in a different city every few years since 1951. Perhaps the most iconic of all the fairs was held in New York over the long, hot summer of 1939. The event was a spectacular success, drawing tens of millions of visitors over six months. It was also around this time that colour home movies were just beginning to take off, thanks to Kodak's groundbreaking new Kodachrome film. This film has been edited together from footage shot by several visitors to that World's Fair, held in in Flushing Meadows--Corona Park, New York City, between April and October 1939. The fact that the wider world teetered on the brink of war at the time merely serves to imbue these beautiful images with a heightened sense of loss for a more innocent time. All of the footage used in this video is in the public domain. Song credit: "Around and Around (John Denver Cover)" performed bv Mountain Man. © 2013 Mountain Man.
