Exodus 15 records the “Song of the Sea” that Moses and the Israelites sang after their victory at the Red Sea. This ancient song spends a lot of time focusing on God’s power and dominance, saying things like God is “my strength,” He is “a warrior,” He drowned the Egyptians in the Red Sea. The song specifically talks about how God used his right hand to wield his superior power over the Egyptians. While a simple gesture like stretching forth one’s hand seems insignificant, it subtly underscores God’s power in the scriptures and can help us look for God’s power in our lives. Nephi (1 Nephi 17:23–53), Abinadi (Mosiah 16:1), and Jesus Christ (3 Nephi 11:9–10) stretched forth their hands in the Book of Mormon to display God’s power in miraculous ways. Today, priesthood holders can stretch forth their hands and channel the power of God in administering priesthood blessings. All members of the church who participate in sacred priesthood ordinances can behold the power of God in our hands and in our hearts, and by doing so rest assured that God is with us. ========== CONTENTS 0:00 – The Song of the Sea in Exodus 15 0:51 – God’s Stretched Forth Hand of Power 2:31 – Nephi and the Red Sea 3:22 – Stretching Forth Our Hands ========== TRANSCRIPT & BLOG POST templeendowment.wordpress.com/2022/02/25/the-song-of-the-sea-and-gods-right-hand/ ========== FURTHER READING & SOURCES Book of Mormon Central, “Why is the Lord's Hand "Stretched Out Still"?, knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-is-the-lords-hand-stretched-out-still Book of Mormon Central, “Why Did Abinadi Stretch Forth His Hand as He Prophesied?, knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-did-abinadi-stretch-forth-his-hand-as-he-prophesied John Gee, A Different Way of Seeing the Hand of the Lord, archive.bookofmormoncentral.org/content/different-way-seeing-hand-lord David Calabro, ‘Stretch Forth Thy Hand and Prophesy’: Hand Gestures in the Book of Mormon, archive.bookofmormoncentral.org/content/%E2%80%9Cstretch-forth-thy-hand-and-prophesy%E2%80%9D-hand-gestures-book-mormon David Rolph Seely, The Image of the Hand of God in the Book of Mormon and the Old Testament, archive.bookofmormoncentral.org/content/image-hand-god-book-mormon-and-old-testament
