Brazil's government says it will deploy troops to five major cities to control a wave of popular protests focusing on the cities which will host games in next year's football World Cup. Shops and banks in Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, have been vandalised by groups of masked activists who fought other demonstrators trying to stop the violence. The protests were sparked by anger at a rise in public transport prices in Sao Paulo but have since mushroomed into much broader discontent about corruption, public services and the high cost of living.
