Turkey’s failed coup happened almost a year ago yet the country remains in chaos. The division is deep between supporters and opponents of President Erdogan. Overflowing prisons, media restrictions, war-like conditions in Turkey’s Kurdish south-east - a society marked by hatred and fear. Since the failed coup of July 15th, 2016, many parts of Turkish society have been in crisis. President Erdogan has pointed the finger of blame firmly at followers of the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. But is it all just a pretext to crack down on dissent? Turkish society is deeply divided between the opponents and the supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, between the winners and the losers. Since the attempted coup of July 15th, 2016, hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, had their property confiscated, ended up in prison or fled abroad. And it’s not just suspected members of the Gülen movement that are being targeted, but also many other government opponents: Kurds, liberal and left-wing politicians, journalists, writers. While Erdogan called the putsch attempt a "gift from Allah”, for many others it has spelled personal disaster. The president has declared the day of the thwarted coup a national holiday. Many observers see that as an attempt to create a founding myth of a "New Turkey”. In this latest documentary, DW delves beneath the surface of Turkish society to find a deeply polarized nation, where mistrust and fear are the only common denominator. We accompany people from both sides of the divide to get their perspective on the situation. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events.
